158. Remembering our Independence Day 2022

On June 12, 1898, after more than 300 years of Spanish colonial rule, the Philippines declared its independence and became a sovereign nation. This day has since been celebrated annually as Independence Day by Filipinos, who honor their country's freedom by hoisting the Philippine flag high in the sky.

The journey to independence was led by General Emilio Aguinaldo, who fought alongside the United States during the Spanish-American War. His proclamation of the Philippine Republic as an independent country on June 12, 1898 marked a historic moment in the nation's history. The declaration was a call for the Philippines to take its place as a dignified member of the community of free nations.

Today, June 12th serves as a reminder of the Philippines' rich history and the sacrifices made by its leaders and people in the pursuit of independence. It celebrates the country's hard-won freedom and its ongoing journey towards growth and development as a democratic nation.
