I am trying to recapture the memories of horse racing in
the Philippines by collecting these medals, badges, and other memorabilia. Filipinos have a passion for betting at horse races
and there’s a lot of history and tradition behind it. Here is a short history of Philippine horse racing.
The Manila Jockey Club, Inc. (MJC) is a horse racing
institution in the Philippines. One of the oldest race clubs in the
Asia-Pacific region, the club was established in 1867 in Manila. The Philippine
Racing Club (PRC) was started in 1937 when a group of Filipino and American
businessmen organized the first racing club during the first years of the
Commonwealth era: the Santa Ana Turf Club (SATC). Established as a rival to the
Manila Jockey Club (MJC), it is the first club to introduce the thoroughbred
style of horse racing and was also organized to use horse
breeds of "superior quality" for horseracing. In 1939, the Philippine
Tuberculosis Society (PTS) Inc which was the beneficiary of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes was included in the holding of yearly National Grand Derby
Races, with the goal of promoting the breeding of local or native horses in the
Philippines.
