46. Early PHILIPPINE HORROR MOVIES

During my childhood days, I enjoyed watching “Dracula” and other vampire movies. Who would forget Christopher Lee’s red eyes and pearly white fangs in early vampire movies? I am not sure why I like to be scared, maybe because of the thrill and chill on my spine that I experience every time, I would watch one. After watching them I cannot sleep thinking that a vampire bat would enter the window and bite me.

Previously, I was not an avid fan of Filipino movies. But when I watched the first “Shake, Rattle & Roll” I was awed in horror. I did not expect then Filipino horror films could be so scary. I particularly enjoyed watching the “Manananggal” episode where Herbert Bautista’s role won him the Best Actor Award at the 1984 Metro Manila Film Festival. Among my favorite horror movies are “Feng Shui” and “Sukob” starring Kris Aquino. Both films were blockbusters, giving the former Presidential Daughter now a Presidential Sister the title “Queen of Horror Movies.”

Horror movies scare us, but why do we like them? Aswangs, tikbalangs, and tianaks have fascinated Filipino audiences for decades.  Pinoy films are filled with elements of fear with plenty of homegrown tales drawn from myth and folklore, which resulted in a bizarre genre that is rich and continually evolving. Today, the movies that feature them dominate the box office, reinforcing the historical significance and cultural relevance of horror movies.

Here are some of my horror movie fliers that time had forgotten. These movies were made before World War II began. Foremost in the collection is Halimaw now considered the first horror movie in the Philippines.

  10. Hi...am looking for the title of a 70's or 80's Pinoy horror movie. There's this woman and she has a sort of a mini monster hiding behind her, looks like a small orangutan. Whenever this monster comes out from behind her, it gives out an eerie "hi, hi, hi" chuckling sound. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
