148. Preserving the Memory of Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III: Commemorating a Legacy through Collectibles

The loss of former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III was a sad and moving event for the Philippines. President Rodrigo Duterte declared June 24 to July 3, 2021, a period of national mourning and ordered the national flag to be flown at half-mast on all government buildings.

"He was a man of principle who strived for what was right, even if it wasn't popular. His tireless efforts for the betterment of the country will be deeply missed," said Vice President Leni Robredo. Noynoy's rise to power started after the death of his mother, former President Corazon Aquino, in 2009, when he was encouraged by the public to run for President. This surge of support became known as the "Noynoy Phenomenon."

Noynoy took office as the 15th President of the Philippines on June 30, 2010, succeeding Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. He was often referred to as "PNoy" in the media. His father, Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., was a staunch opponent of strongman Ferdinand Marcos and was assassinated upon his return from political exile in 1983. The assassination played a significant role in Marcos' downfall in the 1986 People Power revolution and led to his mother's presidency.

Noynoy himself was a survivor of an attempted military coup in 1987 against his mother's administration, during which he was shot five times and three of his bodyguards lost their lives.

To honor his legacy, I would like to share some memorabilia from his presidential campaign in 2010.
