58. Pinoy TEKS Cards ... Filipino kids favorite card game

These "TEKS" cards were printed for a short period and were based on the popular movie or TV series at the time it was printed.  They were sold in "sari-sari" stores or by ambulant vendors near schools because kids could not resist playing with them.  These cards were crudely made and printed on cardboard.  Like comics on cards, each card is meticulously drawn by a Filipino illustrator and were numbered from 1 to 60 or more to complete a storyline.

These could be traded or played in a toss-up like manner by kids. The game relies heavily on betting which side will come up and is decided by flicking the teks in the air. Players usually favor a specific card to use as the cards they'll flip while all the other cards basically act as betting currency.

These cards were made in the 1970s up to the early 1980s, they measure approximately 35 mm x 46 mm. The 1960s cards are a bit bigger and measure 50 mm x 68 mm. Teks are well-loved by the children and very seldom would survive.   I was lucky that I was able to save some of them from my childhood days.

If you have other teks cards that you want to share email me at lumang.gamit@yahoo.com and I will post them here.

    Hi Po,

I just across your blog today and i must say you have an impressive amount of stuff. Looking through it brings back many fond memories when I was a kid growing up in Manila. I am 36 now and living in Australia. I wanted to know if there is such a place in Manila where I can visit when I come back?

Again, thanks for bringing me back to my childhood and mabuhay to you and your family...

    Cheers,
    Michael

  4. Hello Pinoycollector,

I found your site through a photo posted by a good FB friend of mine: Paolo Paddeu, an Italian collector of Filipino flags and symbols.

I am an artist and currently an author of a book on Filipinos of Greater Philadelphia. I hope you'll be interested in "donating" some of the images in your blog, specially images that portray Emilio Aguinaldo and the Philippine American War. In return, I will credit you as the source under each image in the courtesy line, mention you in the acknowledgements and list your blog in the Bibliography.

I hope you can respond by emailing me at eliseoart@earthlink.net.

    Thanks!

  13. I would like to share this email from Anung of Indonesia

    Hi there.
My name is Agung from Indonesia and I really enjoy your blog especially when it comes to your Teks Card.

Here in Indonesia we also have similar children games like that and it is called Gambar Umbul. Literally, Gambar means picture and Umbul means flying. That is because when we played these cards, we flipped them to the air and if the cards show its picture the owner consider the winner and have the right to take over his opponent's card. So this is like social gambling games for children.

It is very interesting to know that this game were widely played all over the world. In Japan this game is called Menko Cards.

Nice to know you and keep posting your work. I love it.

    Regards,
    Agung

  17. Hello! I have collected comic books for more than forty years, but until now, I have never, ever heard of these Tek cards! May I ask you some questions about them? Was there just one series, or mutliple series of Tek cards? What I mean is, for example, was there just one series of Tek cards numbered from # 1 all the way up to over # 600, or multiple series of Tek cards, for EACH fictional character? I am a big Zorro fan and collector, for example. So I am wondering, how many Zorro Tek cards were there? Also, were there Green Hornet Tek cards?
What country are you in, and what country were these Tek cards made in? Why are they called Tek cards? Do you have a Tek card wrapper you could show?
What was the name of the company that produced/-made these cards?
    Thank you!

Are Teks still being played in the Philippines? If so, where are people buying them and what company are printing them?

Does anyone here know where I can buy them in the U.S. or in the Philippines?

    Thanks!

  28. Hi! As msny have said, your blog about these teks is cool and impressive. Although we initially called them as "post cards" having a much bigger size, these teks reminds us all of a fun childhood. I personally collect old toys from my childhood and these teks are the ones that are missing. I wonder if you are interested in selling a few, or if not, perhaps you know of someone or some place selling these. I would be very, very happy if I can acquire some. Thanks in advanced and keep the collection growing.

  29. Thanks for putting together this blog, it's very interesting. I've been trying to put together TEKS sets of Lost in Space, Star Trek, Space 1999, and Star Wars for almost a decade. I only have a couple of dozen cards from each set but also have a handful of spares to trade.
