54. A Nostalgic Journey: Super Robot Stickers of the Past (Voltes V, Mazinger Z, and Daimos)

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Super Robot stickers were all the rage among children in the Philippines. These stickers depicted iconic robots from popular anime series that were televised after school hours, captivating the imaginations of kids across the country. Shows like Voltes V, Mazinger Z, Mekanda, Grendizer, Dangard Ace, Star Rangers, Balatak, and G-Force became household names, and it was hard to find a child who didn't know about these heroic machines.

As a child, collecting Super Robot stickers was a favorite pastime of mine, and I remember buying them from Mang Ruben, a vendor who sold them near the front gates of my school in St. James Academy, Malabon. The stickers were sold in pieces, with the smaller ones priced at 20-35 centavos, the average-sized ones at 50-90 centavos, and a whole page of stickers at 3-4 pesos. The more popular stickers, like Voltes V and Mazinger Z, commanded a higher price than the lesser-known robot stickers.

Collecting these stickers was much more than just acquiring them; it created a strong sense of community among my friends and me. We would eagerly compare and trade stickers, excitedly discussing the latest episodes of our favorite robot anime series. As we proudly displayed our collections in our favorite notebooks or stuck them onto cabinets, we sometimes caused our parents to become a bit angry. But to us, the joy and camaraderie of collecting Super Robot stickers was worth it.

Voltes V Sticker

As I collected these stickers, I encountered many strange-looking robots and characters that were new to me, as they were not featured on TV.  I often found myself wondering about the relationships between different robots, like Great Mazinger and Mazinger Z, or the similarities between Voltes V and Combattler V. The stickers provided a window into a larger world of robots and their adventures, sparking my curiosity and imagination.

Unfortunately, the shows were eventually canceled by President Marcos,  leaving many of my questions unanswered. Nevertheless, my memories and experiences of collecting Super Robot stickers have stayed with me throughout my life, serving as a nostalgic reminder of a time when robots ruled our lives and the TV time slots

These stickers were more than just pieces of paper with pictures on them. They symbolized a shared experience that brought children together, fostering a sense of community and sparking their love for their favorite robots. They provided a gateway to a world of imagination and adventure, where heroic robots fought to save the world and captured our hearts. Looking back, these stickers were not just a simple hobby, but a way of connecting with others, and discovering our own interests and passions, and they hold a special place in our hearts as a representation of our childhoods and cherished memories.

  2. What a beautiful and nostalgic collection! Like you I am a big fan of these 70s anime robot cartoons long before these Dragonball and Ghost Fighter.
I never got to know the ending of Voltes V because of Marcos' ban, until only in the 1990s when I watched in the cinema the complete Voltes V series (I think it was in 1991 when it was shown in the cinemas).
Thank you for sharing. Brings back so many good memories of the olden times.

    1. Hi voltes V, I saw your site PIJ... May I ask how can you buy from that site. Most of the sellers accept bank deposit to Japanese Banks and ship only to Japan. Do they accept PAYPAL? Is there a third party who can facilitate payment and mailing here in the Philippines?

    2. Pinoy Kollektor, yup they accept paypal. bumili na kasi ako before sa kanila eh. Hmm. third party? Wala ata eh. basta bumili lang ako sa knila via Paypal. Mabilis ang shipping and maganda ang packaging :)

  11. I would just like to share this email

    Hi Ed,

Thanks for sharing your collection, it was really nice to see those old super robot advertisements again, I can honestly say na wala ako nyan, pa-copy na lang :)
But I do have some of the stuff posted in your site (and I thought I was the only one who kept and never applied the stickers nor colored their Purefoods coloring books). Heck, I even have the plastic stickers that came free inside Chippys & Cheese Curls!
Even upto now, my (and my brother's) Questors, HK super robot comic books, and pocketbooks are still covered in plastic.
I noticed you don't have the old Shogun Warriors comics series from Marvel, those would be a cool addition to your collection.

Like yours, our school also had a "Mang Ruben," although in female form. Even though her prices escape me, I still have her stickers, some loose, some sheets completely intact.

I remember having those rub on stickers and tex back then, but now, only the Lotte baggie and a few texs remain.
I think I still have the Mazinger & Voltes playing cards though. Last time I saw them, they were in their cardboard boxes.

Also, thank you for posting your die-casts, like you, I am also fond of Japanese toys, not just Voltes V ... BTW, I am drawn to your ST Camp Big Falcon.

I haven't thought of scanning all my collection, but since visiting your site, it might be a good idea after all.
And if I may, share some pics I used sometime ago for my FB page...

Its great to meet people that not only appreciate but also share and preserve what is dear to our childhood.
    Thanks!

And if I'm not mistaken, one of the characters from the 7th image (from the bottom) is Yatterman.

  12. some of my robot comic collection. got mine when I was in Japan several years ago. saw them in a corner of a small manga store next to the train station in Sayama City.
owner suggested that i get a whole series of mazinger z containing around 15 books. he was selling them as a group. could not cram them in my suitcase so i only got 4 copies that were sold as loose items. sayang kung hindi lang mabigat ang magbuhat!

  18. Greetings from the USA! As a true to tone anime fan I have come to learn about the Filipino history of voltes v and the questor robo pack, and I must say you have a lot of experience with these dubs (dubs of which I just can't find anywhere if you do have vhs recordings feel free to post them), because of this, I will continue supporting the series as well as all anime that lands in the Philippines, and I will drop by this page every now and then to see what new posts you got. One last thing, have you heard of voltes v legacy? If so, what are your thoughts on it? Till next time, LET'S VOLT INNNNNNNNN!
