Shores show soldiers having fun at Fort Mills, Corregidor in the 1920s. These snapshots captured soldiers' daily life during a peaceful time, possibly when they felt far from home. Little did they know that Corregidor would become a battleground in World War II, bombarded by a thousand bombs. The postcards offer a glimpse into a time of tranquility before the chaos of war. They paint a picture of camaraderie and leisure amidst what would later become a harrowing battlefield. N.I. Shores' lighthearted scenes contrast starkly with the grim reality that awaited the island. Today, these postcards serve as reminders of the island's unexpected transformation.</span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwxEEbycWiJoRyId73XpPDnkBkoSuH-aAgnbM-lToiwWF_qcktmVflIDKQN2o1mfC3MkYr4vJizccYPLF8tph7cRCyMEHKb2-ttu8zYLsSS873WrP3Uv5kLPFuBAnX0ylKCCuphnqT-9yGGNkSo8_V9h9Y3dpeJAgQ_r9AT31RTzQ7GJ2d18paylZ-IPnn/s3314/Cartoon1PK.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; <p class="MsoNormal">On November 28, 1928, the Philippine Long Distance Telephone
Company (PLDT), the leading telecom provider in the country, was founded under
Act 3436 by the Philippine Legislature, approved by then-American
Governor-General Henry L. Stimson. This legislation merged four telephone
companies under common U.S. ownership, granting PLDT a 50-year charter and the
authority to establish telephone lines across the country within 40 years from
the approval date. Remarkably, in just two years, by 1930, the Philippines was
first connected to the world through radiotelephone services to the United
States and other global destinations.<o:p></o:p></p><br /><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQNZlNKG0dsfLU8Ndqc63M9P7SVG9w0yzVE7FFGldK0_QuJT9mY7C8vRz3y1fuyYH5uWTTtemAtFAt-jxATQFLnF0UdoEE2DhsEVGErtRvqnGKmv7svCsrrbDiSMoXmXI77HZw00vdFLOEKUvSTLSsY6TnLsAfl3m1giTvgaE_haoQT9ZwIJO1ftGpg5ko/s2764/PLDTa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1064" data-original-width="2764" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQNZlNKG0dsfLU8Ndqc63M9P7SVG9w0yzVE7FFGldK0_QuJT9mY7C8vRz3y1fuyYH5uWTTtemAtFAt-jxATQFLnF0UdoEE2DhsEVGErtRvqnGKmv7svCsrrbDiSMoXmXI77HZw00vdFLOEKUvSTLSsY6TnLsAfl3m1giTvgaE_haoQT9ZwIJO1ftGpg5ko/w640-h246/PLDTa.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Pinoy Kollektorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11021361579898122843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6452170543182312514.post-63971146515356216082023-12-11T18:05:00.000-08:002023-12-11T18:11:01.869-08:00169. of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence on <b>June 12, 1898</b> and honored
other significant events in the Philippine Revolution and the
Philippine-American War. It was led by <b>President Fidel V. Ramos </b>as part of his
Philippines 2000 program.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The <b>Centennial's logo</b>, designed by <b>Edgardo Santiago</b>, was
selected as the winner of a national design competition out of 5,000
submissions. It features a rising sun above a blue and red ribbon forming the
number "100" and the slogan "<b>Kalayaan, Kayamanan ng Bayan</b>,"
which translates to "Freedom, Wealth of the Nation." The slogan
highlights the idea that freedom is the nation's wealth.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">A <b>variety of memorabilia</b> items featuring the <b>Centennial's
logo</b> were produced to commemorate the celebration. Philippine Centennial
memorabilia, including items featuring the iconic logo, became highly sought
after by collectors. These items included t-shirts, keychains, mugs, pins, and
other items that bore the logo and served as a reminder of the historic
celebration. The production of these items not only provided an opportunity for
people to take home a piece of the Centennial but also contributed to the
commemoration's financial success.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">As a collector of Philippine memorabilia and a history buff,
I was ecstatic to uncover the Centennial memorabilia I had hidden away for all
these years. It was like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, except
it was pins and keychains at the back of my cabinet. Like many others, I
eagerly added these items to my collection, finally completing my mission to
become the Philippine history hoarder of the century.<o:p></o:p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz6CpcTze5Ov00V-24JVi5dFd60qLdQPMRExZaCCYqf8wZJs_KnAfK56vwMfcUkBu4SGv0pBO1vtN5zNYekVVOoCpO0Q4nuZp-WdqQygYI5tMt8ThZfA_mZCforWqRzl4Wm5wA4lvoCINrEPrCO14tgqcblWOlwgGGShWobxMmBotGLYQP2SM-bVzCdg/s2046/100YearsPin1PK.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; paternity was a subject of speculation, with two possible fathers: Pedro
Singson Gotiaoco, a Chinese immigrant tycoon, and Antonio Sanson, a wealthy
landowner. Recent DNA testing reported by The Freeman confirmed that Sanson was
his biological father, finally putting an end to the mystery. Osmeña had chosen
not to discuss his parentage during his lifetime, leaving historians and his
descendants curious. Genealogist Todd Sales Lucero used traditional methods and
DNA technology, obtaining samples from Osmeña's direct descendants and
achieving a 100% match with the Sanson lineage. Although the revelation does
not define his grandson, Tomas Osmeña, the former mayor emphasizes that the
truth brings an end to speculations and that his grandfather's works and deeds

significance as it commemorates the historic moment when the national emblem
was first unfurled. On March 6, 1965, Presidential Proclamation No. 374
designated May 28 as National Flag Day. This date marks the Battle at Alapan,
Imus, Cavite in 1898, where the Philippine Revolutionary Army emerged
victorious over the Spanish forces, and the national flag was raised for the
first time.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">To further honor the national flag, Executive Order No. 79
was issued on May 23, 1994, extending the period of celebrating National Flag
Day from May 28 to June 12. This aligns with the commemoration of Philippine
Independence Day on June 12, emphasizing the deep connection between the flag
and the country's struggle for freedom.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">During this period, all Filipinos are encouraged to proudly
display the Philippine flag in various settings, including government offices,
businesses, schools, and private homes. This act of showcasing the flag serves
as an expression of respect, reverence, and unity towards our symbol of
national sovereignty.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">The Philippine flag represents more than just a piece of
cloth. It is the embodiment of the nation's ideals, culture, and traditions. It
stands as a unifying symbol that transcends differences and brings Filipinos
together in solidarity. By displaying the flag, Filipinos demonstrate their
love for their country and their commitment to upholding its values.<o:p></o:p></p><p>

the tail end of the vinyl era before CDs took over the music scene. During that
time, my musical preferences leaned heavily towards the new wave genre,
particularly British bands like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, and Spandau Ballet.
Their records, with their beautiful album covers and catchy tunes, became
cherished possessions in my collection. I vividly remember spending hours
immersed in the vibrant sounds of my favorite albums, occasionally indulging in
Michael Jackson's iconic "Thriller."<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">While my musical interests primarily revolved around
international artists, I had a passing familiarity with Philippine music of the
time. I couldn't escape the infectious melodies of APO's catchy songs or the
powerful energy of The Dawn's "Envelope of Ideas" playing on the
radio. Although I appreciated their music, I never felt compelled to purchase
their records or go deeper into the local music scene.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">Fast forward to the early 2000s, when a wave of nostalgia
washed over me, igniting my interest in vinyl records once again. However, this
time around, I found myself drawn to a different sound—Pinoy Rock music from
the 70s. I eagerly sought out vinyl records by iconic Filipino bands such as
Juan Dela Cruz Band, Maria Cafra, Anak Bayan, and Sampaguita. The lively and
disco nature of Manila Sound made by VST and Hotdog became a newfound passion.
The thrill of discovering albums from the golden age of Pinoy Rock and Manila
Sound became an addiction, fueling my desire to expand my collection. I also
became captivated by the Bossa Nova sound of Bong Penera, with its resemblance
to the Samba songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlrFcZ7FgPVj27dwksgEh1O5HC_lHOukWLGJRIqVMU497irTUOsRUbpawp2zrC3dY2P8Rjdk-nhtuQxZutBT0ZlHADUBN7wsxz5Pz2B-5OjlGOK1r7PksRdyaCUwmkIfo7QlDjVGMZYgQBmqp2AleB2VAmyNqALc0IjuH7k8BcFM6B3DgVAixwhzm8sw/s4288/4PK.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4288" data-original-width="2848" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlrFcZ7FgPVj27dwksgEh1O5HC_lHOukWLGJRIqVMU497irTUOsRUbpawp2zrC3dY2P8Rjdk-nhtuQxZutBT0ZlHADUBN7wsxz5Pz2B-5OjlGOK1r7PksRdyaCUwmkIfo7QlDjVGMZYgQBmqp2AleB2VAmyNqALc0IjuH7k8BcFM6B3DgVAixwhzm8sw/w426-h640/4PK.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">As I delved deeper into the world of OPM (Original Pilipino
Music) vinyl, a profound sense of longing enveloped me, connecting me to the
sounds I had heard while growing up. The music that once
filled the airwaves during my younger years now transported me back to a time
of innocence and youthful exuberance. Each crackle and pop on the vinyl surface
evoked memories of listening to these songs, embracing the spirit
of the era. Collecting OPM vinyl records became more than just a hobby; it
became a tangible connection to my past and a celebration of Filipino musical
heritage.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">In my quest to build an extensive OPM vinyl collection, I
began seeking out other notable artists from the time. I discovered the pop
songs of Sharon Cuneta and Celeste Legaspi, two iconic figures in the
Philippine music industry. Their records not only showcased their vocal
prowess but also captured the essence of Pinoy pop music during the 80s.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">Additionally, I found myself delving into the music of other
influential Filipino artists from the 80s and 90s. The likes of Regine Velasquez, Lea
Salonga, Janno Gibbs, Manilyn Reynes, Joey Albert, Martin Nievera, and Gary
Valenciano became integral to my collection. Their records represented a
diverse range of musical styles, from power ballads to upbeat pop hits. Each
vinyl album carried the signature sound and talent of these artists, serving as
a time capsule of the 80s music scene in the Philippines.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">Collecting OPM vinyl records allowed me to rekindle my love
for Filipino music and appreciate the artistry that had once shaped our
nation's musical landscape. As the needle finds its groove on each vinyl
record, the nostalgia, the memories, and the passion for music intertwine,
creating a tapestry of emotions that transcends time. My journey into the world
of OPM vinyl has been a reminder of the power of music to connect us to our
roots, evoke cherished memories, and keep the spirit of our musical past

Pre-War Filipiniana and Other Cigar Bands<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Cigar band</b> collecting was a popular pastime in the prewar
years, as collectors sought out the intricate and colorful designs of cigar
bands from various brands, including <b>Germinal, La Flor</b>, and <b>Alhambra</b>. These
bands served as a symbol of the thriving tobacco industry, and collectors would
arrange them into collages, creating unique works of art. Today, surviving
examples of these cigar band collages are a <b>nostalgic reminder of the past</b> and
the popularity of the cigar culture, and they stand as a testament to the<b> rich
history of the tobacco industry</b> and the <b>artistry behind cigar production</b>.<o:p></o:p></p><p>
</p><p class="MsoNormal">Cigar band collecting was a popular hobby among smokers and
non-smokers alike. The bands were readily available and made for an accessible
<b>form of collecting</b>, with their colorful designs and intricate details making
them desirable for collectors to gather, trade, and showcase. These bands were
collected not only for their <b>aesthetic appeal,</b> but also for their <b>rarity and
historical significance</b>, serving as a record of the collector's smoking
experiences. To showcase their collections, some collectors would create albums
or scrapbooks, and the hobby was not limited to any specific demographic,
appealing to people of all ages and backgrounds who could appreciate the beauty
and artistry of these small pieces of paper. Today, surviving examples of<b>
Philippine cigar band collections </b>are a valuable source of information for
historians and collectors, providing a <b>glimpse into the culture and traditions
of the tobacco industry in the Philippines in the past.</b><o:p></o:p></p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqY-OAK_YLTdfTMPUak00QzZ3lOGp8Rb51OvbPAp1ufnnXggPYDFSwMc2g6DfJ_hyDie45FWrY7t3lIlPR6R_Bi7SU6vdE7AcFgr7B-QBps4-vs6J4h7UrVbpI58L8Cuq_bqtU_oLiVCVom5b-F7S0MOEwq2ELHO51E6PrZmjF2Nw_KWxkxeE56pxXSw/s1300/scan0013PK.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; Philippines celebrated the <b>life and legacy</b> of former <b>President Corazon
"Cory" Aquino</b> with a special event. The occasion marked what would
have been her 77th birthday and was marked by the launch of a tribute watch
designed by industrialist Jaime Zobel de Ayala for Swiss watch company, Swatch.
The highlight of the event was the <b>yellow color</b>, known as the <b>"color of
courage"</b> in the Philippines, symbolizing the Aquino family and the 1986
People's Power Revolution.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">Cory was widely revered for her honesty and sincerity during
her presidency and continues to be celebrated as a cultural icon through
various items like books and shirts. The <b>Cory Aquino Swatch</b> watch, accessible
and popular, was launched with much fanfare, including yellow confetti raining
on Ayala Avenue, reminiscent of the <b>1986 People's Power Revolution</b>. Cory's
children, close friends, and supporters, including Virgie Ramos of Gift Gate,
exclusively distributing Swatch in the Philippines, and Jaime Zobel and his
wife Bea, who became strong supporters of Cory after meeting her husband
Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino in exile, were in attendance.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">In conclusion, the <b>Cory Aquino Swatch watch </b>is a testament
to her impact on Philippine democracy and her lasting impact on the people of
the Philippines, as her death is still mourned and her legacy continues to be
celebrated.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Reference: An Icon for Our Time: Swatch Issues Corazon Aquino Tribute

During this time, he was exposed to a variety of intellectual and cultural
influences that would shape his later ideas and works. At Ateneo, he learned
Spanish, French, and German, and was introduced to the works of European
writers and philosophers. He also joined literary and debate clubs, which
allowed him to engage in lively discussions and debates on a range of topics.
These experiences helped Rizal develop his critical thinking skills and shaped
his views on Philippine society, culture, and politics.<o:p></o:p></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiXyN7Y4nxPvQFhS4TBHMTKwd3SKnGtWkV6X4t2N4tJcEKgO9sfCLUhm-Kv7TQ1qklYSbqfHLQlwncSEUVxhBmeZa7CByzD0YaO0xE3KV-ViPk-n-c3c3E1FQ63nfxO8u-WR1Y9SKwMrXbEIZ26CnwLE6sjvN3V02lifV8UZYEYSDp-UFYfO4H85ndWA/s1500/RizalAteneoMedalPostcardPK.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1176" data-original-width="1500" height="502" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiXyN7Y4nxPvQFhS4TBHMTKwd3SKnGtWkV6X4t2N4tJcEKgO9sfCLUhm-Kv7TQ1qklYSbqfHLQlwncSEUVxhBmeZa7CByzD0YaO0xE3KV-ViPk-n-c3c3E1FQ63nfxO8u-WR1Y9SKwMrXbEIZ26CnwLE6sjvN3V02lifV8UZYEYSDp-UFYfO4H85ndWA/w640-h502/RizalAteneoMedalPostcardPK.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span face=""Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Rizal in Ateneo postcards, 1910 Ateneo Rizal Colegio de Farmacia (10 karat Gold) & 1916 Ateneo Rizal Colegio de Agricultura (Silver)</span></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHSOQ0_SP89WwnjjTLQNhY89PX2Hbl-4qRpftIxRgTCcHaOiEy2Au309yMzYrY7cZxuRklpJLVHbY5Mz_WRV6hBvk7dqiYgz-WMS6dcFfwLyjN3p3jIHOVhv2iP4JSQ05StBnfQFSZquca8ArH0k1RRlfk8rCIZXdxiIoMMd1EaBJ8w8OOFVbT9TcKgQ/s1652/Rizal%20Ateneo%20goldPK.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="908" data-original-width="1652" height="352" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHSOQ0_SP89WwnjjTLQNhY89PX2Hbl-4qRpftIxRgTCcHaOiEy2Au309yMzYrY7cZxuRklpJLVHbY5Mz_WRV6hBvk7dqiYgz-WMS6dcFfwLyjN3p3jIHOVhv2iP4JSQ05StBnfQFSZquca8ArH0k1RRlfk8rCIZXdxiIoMMd1EaBJ8w8OOFVbT9TcKgQ/w640-h352/Rizal%20Ateneo%20goldPK.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;">1910 ATENEO RIZAL COLEGIO DE FARMACIA awarded to Juan Quizon, Por Mayor Exelencia (10 karat Gold)</span></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwp7ZmTAofidLOFx2HCiMFjOwFF4PGO-UMNq9yjZi8ZtXjCIn9a6hdb6Xf4lqKtos1RIV3v4TQU-wHn3RH0EdjvRfiGQRfDzxNuG15mNGeW82HOMiXe306kcLJfxpV8lHtVtq9o9kjq6HQluMMdm1_Q-zW_r69jHJHSGLIKNqqbBLCkN8dDy1fUZN65g/s1929/Rizal%20AteneoPK.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1016" data-original-width="1929" height="338" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwp7ZmTAofidLOFx2HCiMFjOwFF4PGO-UMNq9yjZi8ZtXjCIn9a6hdb6Xf4lqKtos1RIV3v4TQU-wHn3RH0EdjvRfiGQRfDzxNuG15mNGeW82HOMiXe306kcLJfxpV8lHtVtq9o9kjq6HQluMMdm1_Q-zW_r69jHJHSGLIKNqqbBLCkN8dDy1fUZN65g/w640-h338/Rizal%20AteneoPK.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span style="line-height: 107%;">1916

Remembering our Independence Day 2022<p>On <b>June 12, 1898</b>, after more than 300 years of Spanish
colonial rule, the Philippines declared its independence and became a sovereign
nation. This day has since been celebrated annually as Independence Day by
Filipinos, who honor their country's freedom by hoisting the Philippine flag
high in the sky.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The journey to independence was led by General Emilio
Aguinaldo, who fought alongside the United States during the Spanish-American
War. His proclamation of the <b>Philippine Republic</b> as an independent country on
June 12, 1898 marked a historic moment in the nation's history. The declaration
was a call for the Philippines to take its place as a dignified member of the
community of free nations.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Today, June 12th serves as a reminder of the Philippines'
rich history and the sacrifices made by its leaders and people in the pursuit
of independence. It celebrates the country's hard-won freedom and its ongoing
journey towards growth and development as a democratic nation.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qLz_OZjNm50/YxF9vPGQSvI/AAAAAAAAJ3k/yjVqG6761cYKxIA6s0H3IO3yM0WhRAujQCNcBGAsYHQ/s1424/2%2BPK.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1424" data-original-width="1345" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qLz_OZjNm50/YxF9vPGQSvI/AAAAAAAAJ3k/yjVqG6761cYKxIA6s0H3IO3yM0WhRAujQCNcBGAsYHQ/w604-h640/2%2BPK.jpg" width="604" /></a></div><br /><p class="MsoNormal"><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoMUVR5u5aEEdxIdg1mZxggzzSEXL12klNaE4HhJEx8yYUdEs7I6ysbEWcjsvijFVyAlzFrw6KwBlShfkOqCqZxwGosRyg53tkpd9J9ZWSTKmSXJT9SeX_A3bsD_P6MVcXk32Ms5g8KipJpuqJmM3pGk6lAiGiMgf84ft4DEBGnLapXLl_jNXdjlaz2g/s3635/Aguinaldo%20FlagPK.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2910" data-original-width="3635" height="512" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoMUVR5u5aEEdxIdg1mZxggzzSEXL12klNaE4HhJEx8yYUdEs7I6ysbEWcjsvijFVyAlzFrw6KwBlShfkOqCqZxwGosRyg53tkpd9J9ZWSTKmSXJT9SeX_A3bsD_P6MVcXk32Ms5g8KipJpuqJmM3pGk6lAiGiMgf84ft4DEBGnLapXLl_jNXdjlaz2g/w640-h512/Aguinaldo%20FlagPK.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p class="MsoNormal"></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">Gen. his boxing career in 1919 and quickly established himself as a formidable
fighter, winning several titles in his home country. </p><p class="MsoNormal">Villa's arrival in the United States marked a turning point
in his career, as he quickly defeated the American flyweight champion, <b>Johnny
Buff</b>, in a nontitle fight just months after his arrival. He went on to win the
world flyweight championship by knocking out <b>Jimmy Wilde of Wales</b> in the
seventh round on June 18, 1923. Throughout his career, Villa made several
successful title defenses and maintained a record of <b>73 wins, with 22 by
knockouts.</b> </p><p class="MsoNormal">Tragically, Villa's life was cut short when he died from
<b>blood poisoning caused by an infected gum</b> just ten days after his last fight, a

human shoulders can pose a challenge for even the largest snakes. In 1932, a

Palawan Iwahig Penal Colony Postcards <p> </p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">The Spanish
regime had earlier designated Puerto Princesa, Palawan as a place where
offenders sentenced to banishment were exiled, often as a death sentence due to endemic malaria. Yet, the facility was established only during the American
occupation. Governor Luke Wright authorized the establishment of a penal colony
in the province of Palawan on November 16, 1904. This penal settlement, which
originally comprised an area of 22 acres, served as a depository for prisoners
who could not be accommodated at the Bilibid Prison in Manila. A prison
facility was created by the American military in the rainforest of Puerto
Princesa. Lieutenant George Wolfe, a member of the U.S. expeditionary force was
the prison's first superintendent.</span> </p>

Cameron Forbes, in his capacity as Secretary of Commerce and Police
(1904–1909), conceived of the Palawan penal colony following the model of the
George Junior Republic. According to Forbes, "The plan is to allow these prisoners to cultivate little lots of land for good conduct and
industry." Three classes of colonists were established, the lowest being
the newly arrived convicts, followed by a middle class living in the Home Zone
on a two-hectare plot where they could build a house and live with their
family, and finally, the top class living in the Free Zone, also with 2 hectares
of land. The first group of 61 convicts arrived in Nov. 1904, with the
population reaching 313 prisoners in June 1905, and 446 in June 1908, plus 20
families.<o:p></o:p><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Major John
R. White, Philippine Constabulary, became superintendent in Sept. 1906. Forbes
directed White to establish a "form of self-government in the
colony." Under White's rule, the mortality rate due to disease dropped, as
the land was drained and sanitation improved. Barracks, an administration
building, and a parade ground were built, while cash crops and coconut trees were
planted. The work squads were controlled with a system consisting of a foreman
and assistant foremen. By the time he departed in Sept. 1908, White stated
the 500 convicts lived under "moral constraints" and "interior
discipline maintained without guards." Carroll H. Lamb took over as
superintendent, and during his 3-year tenure, self-government was established.
In 1909, Justice of the Peace Courts and a Court of Last Resort were
established, and by 1910, the top class of colonists could elect minor officials,
police, and petty officers. By 1911, with a population over 1000, Forbes stated
"the colonists were allowed to govern themselves – elect their own
president and council, or legislature, from among the men who by good conduct
and industry had earned a promotion to the highest grades."<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">The
Philippine Commission of the United States government passed Act No. 1723 in
1907, classifying the settlement as a penal institution. Prison escape attempts
were an initial problem the colony experienced during its first 2 years,
including 33 escapees on 20 Sept. 1905. Yet, through White's efforts, the
settlement became a successful colony. Vocational activities included farming,
fishing, forestry, and carpentry, from which the prisoners were free to choose.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><br /></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Source: Wikipedia</span></p>Pinoy Kollektorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11021361579898122843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6452170543182312514.post-10362320006054993582021-12-30T00:00:00.003-08:002023-01-31T20:13:20.611-08:00152. Nostalgic Charm of HOTEL METROPOLE Manila through its Timeless Postcards<p class="MsoNormal">The <b>Hotel Metropole</b> in Sta. Cruz, Manila was once a
prominent fixture at the foot of the old Sta. Cruz Bridge. It was known for its
luxurious accommodations and elegant architecture, attracting wealthy and
famous guests from around the world.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">Constructed in the early 1900s, the Metropole Hotel was a
symbol of prosperity and sophistication in Sta. Cruz, Manila. It was renowned
for its elegant interiors, spacious rooms, and modern amenities, making it one
of the most sought-after destinations for travelers in the city. The hotel was
also a popular gathering place for the social elite, who would gather in its
chic lounges and dining halls to mix and mingle.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">However, the Metropole Hotel's days of grandeur were cut
short by the devastation of World War II. The old Sta. Cruz Bridge, which the
hotel was located near, was destroyed during the conflict, and the Metropole
Hotel was left in ruins. Despite attempts to rebuild and restore the hotel, it
eventually fell into disrepair and was abandoned.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">In the years that followed, the site of the former Metropole
Hotel underwent a transformation. The old Sta. Cruz Bridge was replaced by
MacArthur Bridge, and the hotel's remains were eventually converted into FEATI
University, a renowned institution of higher learning. Today, the site remains
a hub of education and culture in Sta. Cruz, Manila, but the memory of the Old
Metropole Hotel lives on as a testament to the city's rich history and
heritage.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi581ZOJ3NTvwe7BjVlf6VplpQ3woUsW3ng524LpXoQXWAjrQVbkxkJ6scG3IOJHism3LrKL0kxghMSIjHVLim-itZv5tGLyCFLFG_7vn4YGb4Gje2-Tpc_oP09o50i9rWF42ijEIqMYUllxaNIMHCm3wCJC4S5HRINxxY53qVMxbOcnS3J0km9wuf_5g=s3618" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2599" data-original-width="3618" height="460" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi581ZOJ3NTvwe7BjVlf6VplpQ3woUsW3ng524LpXoQXWAjrQVbkxkJ6scG3IOJHism3LrKL0kxghMSIjHVLim-itZv5tGLyCFLFG_7vn4YGb4Gje2-Tpc_oP09o50i9rWF42ijEIqMYUllxaNIMHCm3wCJC4S5HRINxxY53qVMxbOcnS3J0km9wuf_5g=w640-h460" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><span face=""Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-size: 15px;">Fascinating old postcards of the Metropole Hotel, located at the foot of the old Sta. Philippine Tunes: Music Sheet Collection<p> The Philippines has a rich musical heritage with a mix of
indigenous, Spanish, and American influences. In the traditional Filipino
music, notation was usually passed down orally and not written down. However,
with the arrival of Western classical music in the Philippines during the
American colonial period, Western staff notation became widely used for
transcribing both classical and popular music.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">During the American regime in the Philippines, which lasted
from 1898 to 1946, music underwent a significant transformation and music
sheets became more popular. The newly established public school system included
music in the curriculum, leading to the establishment of music conservatories
and colleges that produced the first generation of Filipino composers. These
composers wrote in western idioms and forms, creating a classical art music
tradition that continues to flourish today.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">In addition to classical art music, the era also saw the
development of a lighter type of music, such as stylized folk songs, theater
music, and instrumental music. The sarswela tradition produced a large body of
music consisting of songs patterned after opera arias, as well as short
instrumental overtures and interludes.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">With the rise of mass entertainment through film, film sheet
music based on classical and traditional films became popular among the masses.
Film scores encompassed a wide variety of styles, including Western classical
music and Philippine music styles.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Filipinos were also influenced by American pop culture,
leading to the creation of Pinoy pop, a wide range of music forms such as folk
songs, dance tunes, ballads, Broadway-type songs, rock 'n' roll, disco, jazz,
and rap. This style of music was created using western pop forms and reflects
the American lifestyle in the Philippines during the era.<o:p></o:p></p>

Aquino III was a sad and moving event for the Philippines. President Rodrigo
Duterte declared June 24 to July 3, 2021, a period of national mourning and
ordered the national flag to be flown at half-mast on all government buildings.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">"He was a man of principle who strived for what was
right, even if it wasn't popular. His tireless efforts for the betterment of
the country will be deeply missed," said Vice President Leni Robredo.
Noynoy's rise to power started after the death of his mother, former President
Corazon Aquino, in 2009, when he was encouraged by the public to run for
President. This surge of support became known as the "Noynoy
Phenomenon."<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">Noynoy took office as the 15th President of the Philippines
on June 30, 2010, succeeding Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. He was often referred to
as <b>"PNoy"</b> in the media. His father, Senator Benigno Aquino
Jr., was a staunch opponent of strongman Ferdinand Marcos and was assassinated
upon his return from political exile in 1983. The assassination played a
significant role in Marcos' downfall in the 1986 People Power revolution and
led to his mother's presidency.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">Noynoy himself was a survivor of an attempted military coup
in 1987 against his mother's administration, during which he was shot five
times and three of his bodyguards lost their lives.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">
